A Big Day Out for the Vegetable Sector

January 30, 2025

Research and knowledge sharing in the produce sector is usually limited to government led updates, local grower network opportunities and the formal publication of online research from a range of interested parties. This February, Onions NZ is delighted to be a  key stakeholder in the Te Ahikawariki/Vegetable Industry Centre of Excellence (VICE) project, and a supporter of the Vegetable Big Day Out (VBDO) event. VBDO attendees will get to meet other vegetable growers, connect with industry members, engage with academics and the government bodies that support our sector. We see this as a great way to share best practice and the latest technology, and be part of the next wave of Kiwi vegetable innovation.

On the 3rd and 4th of February 2025, the Plant and Food Research Centre, Cronin Road, Pukehohe will play host to vegetable growers across the motu, interested in understanding more about vegetable research and topical issues for the sector. The applied research demonstration farm will showcase a range of indoor and outdoor presentations on a wide range of topics.

Onion growers can enjoy an outdoor session touring the onion crop at the demonstration farm, and also learn more about integrated pest management, biodiversity, resistance management, Sustainable Vegetable Systems (SVS), cover cropping, careers in the vegetable industry, technology demonstrations and more.

“Our team is excited to provide our onion community and other vegetable growers the opportunity to connect and learn practical techniques and new innovations that they can implement into their business operations immediately.” James Kuperus, Onions NZ Chief Executive.

While the event is now sold out, thanks to huge interest from our vegetable grower community, we’re excited to be supporting this important event for our onion growers and for the benefit of all Aotearoa vegetable growers. We’re looking forward to some great conversations with growers next month, and can’t wait to share our key learnings and highlights with our community after the event.

Although the event is sold out, attendees can view the event programme here.
